A recent study has found that patients suffering from Lynch syndrome carry certain mutated genes which make the vulnerable to develop cancer. The study was conducted by the researchers of the Melbourne University.
For the study, the researchers examined the 450 cancer patients who also carried mutated genes responsible of triggering Lynch syndrome. The study was a long study as after every five year the cell activities and the DNA of the patients were tested.
The findings of the study have been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. In the journal, the researchers have informed about a link between Lynch syndrome and various types of cancers. However, a patient suffering from Lynch syndrome is at high risk of developing stomach, bladder and endometrial cancers.
During the study, the researchers also found that Lynch syndrome patients are considerably higher risk of developing breast cancer and pancreatic cancer. The reason behind it is mutated genes which makes it hard for the cells of the body to avoid or prevent the growth of the cancer cells.
Further studies in this field have been called for. The researchers are hopeful that through the help of the findings effective treatment for Lynch syndrome would be invented so that patients could be saved from being affected with cancer.
Stem cell therapy could also help in treating the diseases in the coming time. The lead researcher of the study, Associate Professor Mark Jenkins said, ?While not a common condition, approximately 20,000 Australians have Lynch syndrome and a very high risk of cancer. Over time, as improved screening methods become available, the findings may help doctors refine screening guidelines for breast, uterus, colon and other cancers among patients with Lynch syndrome?.
