Broadway lights go up in post-Sandy NYC

Pedestrians huddle under their umbrellas in Times Square, Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, in New York. Hurricane Sandy continued on its path Monday, as the storm forced the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds and soaking rain. (AP) ? The lights went up again on Broadway Wednesday for the first time since Hurricane Sandy hit New York, as entertainers headed back to work in a city still wracked by power-outages and a suspended subway system.

Though some Broadway shows, including Disney's "Mary Poppins" and "The Lion King" remained dark Wednesday night, the curtain was to rise for many of the other 38 shows, including "Cyrano De Bergerac." Patrick Page, who plays the villain Comte de Guiche in the production, was heading back to the theater for a matinee performance, even if he was unsure if there would be anyone in the seats.

"Broadway is as important an icon of New York City as the subways, so to get back to work is a sign that we can bounce back," he said. "This has been such a tough time for so many and it's vital that we show the lights are on and there's great work being done onstage."

Page said he spent a restless time off in his Upper West Side neighborhood, worried about his in-laws along the New Jersey shore ? he is married to actress and TV personality Paige Davis. He said he checked Facebook to find out how friends were fairing, obsessively watched the news and went out to check that neighbors had ridden out the storm.

"We're New Yorkers," he said. "We'll get through this."

The company of "Peter and the Starcatcher," the Tony Award-nominated prequel to Peter Pan, faced some tense moments before their Wednesday matinee. Five of their dozen cast members live in Brooklyn and faced a dicey commute. For instance, their Peter Pan, Adam Chanler-Berat, didn't fly to the theater ? he biked.

As the 2 p.m. show loomed, all the cast was in place, except for Isaiah Johnson, who plays Captain Scott. Playwright Rick Elice and co-director Roger Rees, who were both at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, each was ready to go on if he didn't make it. He did ? but only five minutes until curtain.

In downtown theaters, though, the stories were grim.

The SoHo Rep was without power and had some flooding, while MCC Theatre had no electricity Wednesday. The Barrow Street Theatre was dark and facing the prospect of canceling additional performances of "Tribes" while they await power. The Bank Street Theater is without power and its basement is flooded, forcing the Labyrinth Theater Company to put off the first preview of their "Radiance." One of the cast members of Eve Ensler's "Emotional Creature," playing on 42nd Street, lives in Long Island, has no electricity and may not be able to get to tonight's performance.

All Broadway shows planned to be back on schedule Thursday and some even managed to turn the mess into promotions. "The Performers" was offering a "Sandy Special" of $29.50 for top tickets, while the Roundabout Theatre Company let patrons with MetroCards buy tickets for $20 to its "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."

New York's late-night TV hosts were back in swing, though, with all resuming regular production Wednesday. The remaining holdouts ? Jon Stewart with "The Daily Show" and Stephen Colbert with "The Colbert Report" ? were to join David Letterman ("The Late Show"), Jimmy Fallon ("Late Night") and Jimmy Kimmel ("Jimmy Kimmel Live"), who is doing a week of shows in Brooklyn, on the airwaves.

All were to tape with a live studio audience Wednesday. Out of safety and caution, Letterman taped Monday and Tuesday's episodes in front of an empty Ed Sullivan Theater, but it will again be full Wednesday. Fallon did the same at Rockefeller Center on Monday.

Other New York cultural institutions were forced to continue to cancel planned events. Carnegie Hall, which sits on 57th Street near the hanging crane, announced that its Thursday concerts were postponed, after having already done the same for Wednesday night's performances. Lincoln Center swung back into business Wednesday, with the exception of a handful of events. Performances were also to resume at the Metropolitan Opera.

For many, figuring out exactly when to reopen business was a daunting and uncertain decision. While parts of the New York transit system have been restored, predictions on when subways, commuter rails and power to the southern end of Manhattan have generally been vague. Knowing when both performers and audience can get to their stages, TV studios and concert halls has been a day-by-day waiting game.

The Keep a Child Alive foundation announced Wednesday that the 9th annual Black Ball, scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed. Alicia Keys was to host, Oprah Winfrey was to be honored and Beyonce was to perform at the Hammerstein Ballroom event, which raises money to fight AIDS in Africa.

Robert De Niro's Tribeca Enterprises, the umbrella organization that includes the annual Tribeca Film Festival and the film distribution company Tribeca Film, has remained closed and without power. The organization's nonprofit arm, the Tribeca Film Institute, on Wednesday canceled its annual benefit which was to be a special screening Thursday for the James Bond film "Skyfall." It has been postponed until Monday, and cast members are no longer able to attend.

Film and TV production in New York has ceased outside of sound stages, as the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting said it would not grant permits to shoot in exterior locations throughout the five boroughs until at least Saturday. Production on shows from "30 Rock" to "Gossip Girl" has been affected.

"The city has not issued any location permits this week, so probably the earliest we'll be able to shoot is this weekend," said Warren Leight, executive producer of "Law & Order: SVU." ''We are able to do some location scouting tomorrow and we have our production meetings by phone, with people on their cells and calling from their cars. The main issue is going to be getting power restored."

Some celebrities sought to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Edward Norton on Wednesday kicked off a crowd-funded relief effort via the website CrowdRise.com, with money donated from various companies to help spark giving.

"We wanted to make it easy for people to quickly support relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy through reliable organizations and, even better, to have the impact of their dollars doubled," said Norton. "So CrowdRise has rallied a bunch of great companies committed to matching the funds raised through our page."

The storm also made a mess of Henry Winkler's birthday plans. The one-time TV "Fonzie," rode out the storm safely in upper Manhattan but his thoughts were with those suffering in New Jersey, Long Island and lower Manhattan. He turned 67 on Monday.

"It made my birthday insignificant," said Winkler, who stars as a veteran porn star in the new Broadway comedy "The Performers." ''Just to be able to take a walk was pretty terrific. You think you know how to plan for a storm after all these years and then it makes history. All those millions of people affected, it breaks my heart."

Romney cancels NH trip as storm approaches

FINDLAY, Ohio (AP) ? Mitt Romney has canceled plans to campaign in New Hampshire this week because of the storm bearing down on the East Coast.

It's the second major schedule change for the Republican presidential candidate with the election just nine days away. Romney campaigned in Ohio on Sunday instead of Virginia as planned.

He told supporters at the University of Findlay that, quote, "our thoughts and prayers are with people who will find themselves in harm's way."

President Barack Obama has also changed his campaign schedule for the coming days. The election is Nov. 6 and early voting is already underway in several states.

Romney was supposed to campaign in New Hampshire on Tuesday. He last held an event there on Sept. 7.

The campaign also canceled a Monday appearance set for Romney's wife, Ann.

Family Fun: Pumpkin Carving Contest : Ideas for Women Home and ...

If you did the pumpkin carving yesterday with us then you are all set for today?s contest. If not then you will have to carve your pumpkins as well. Having a family or even a neighborhood pumpkin carving contest for your children can be tons of fun. The first thing to remember that this is for the kids so it will be important that each child wins some sort of an award because you want to?acknowledge?their work.

Determine who will be the judge(s) and you will do what work ahead of time. You will also need to determine the?categories? such as ?Best Crooked Smile.? ?Make sure their is a?category?so that each child can win in but also have an overall winner. While you want to?acknowledge?each child?s work you don?t want them to think that they get to win all the time at everything.

Once the pumpkins are carved put them on display whether or a table, the front porch, or in the yard. Be sure the judge(s) walk around looking very?official?and writing things down. Then have an award?ceremony?where you announce the winners. The kids will have a blast waiting to see if their pumpkin won and you will have a blast spending time with them.

VA Guarantees 20 Millionth Home Loan | RealEstateRama

VA?s Home Loan Program Continues to Lead Mortgage Industry

WASHINGTON, DC ? October 26, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? Today the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it has guaranteed 20 million home loans since its home loan program was established in 1944 as part of the original GI Bill of Rights for returning World War II Veterans. The 20 millionth loan was guaranteed for a home in Woodbridge, Va., purchased by the surviving spouse of an Iraq War Veteran who passed away in 2010.

Given the current low interest rates, the program has grown significantly in the past five years, with 71 percent more purchases and 20 times as many refinances processed in fiscal year (FY) 2012 than in FY 2007. Currently, there are 1.7 million VA guaranteed home loans in existence with a total value of $284 billion. VA has guaranteed 540,000 mortgages in 2012.

?The 20 millionth VA home loan is a major milestone and is a testament to VA?s commitment to support and enhance the lives of Veterans, Servicemembers, their families and survivors,? said Allison A. Hickey, VA?s undersecretary for benefits. ?As a result of their service and sacrifice, as a group, they prove to be disciplined, reliable, and honorable?traits that are ideal for this kind of national investment.?

The program makes home ownership more affordable for eligible Veterans, Servicemembers, and surviving spouses by providing access to lower cost financing. VA loans are also attractive within the mortgage industry because they protect lenders from loss if the borrower fails to repay the loan. Mortgages guaranteed by VA have had the lowest foreclosure rate for the last 17 quarters and the lowest delinquency rate for the last 14 quarters compared to all other types of home loans in the nation, including prime loans, according to a report by the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Much of the strength of VA?s home loan program stems from the efforts of VA employees and its industry partners nationwide to ensure Veterans receive every possible opportunity to remain in their homes and avoid foreclosure. Since 2009, VA?s efforts have resulted in over $8 billion in savings to taxpayers in foreclosure avoidance.

Veterans may obtain a certificate of eligibility for a VA-guaranteed home loan through the joint Department of Defense?VA web portal eBenefits at www.ebenefits.va.gov. To obtain more information about the VA Home Loan Program, visit the program?s home page at www.benefits.va.gov/homeloans.

Your Official Job-Application Checklist - Education for the 21st Century

October 21, 2012

?

It follows that obsessiveness is a good quality in applicants for tenure-track positions. Most fields (although not all subfields) are buyers? markets. With hundreds of candidates?many of them highly qualified?for one position in, say, 20th-century American literature, harried committees are often looking for some way to narrow the pool. A missing item (like Page 2 of your teaching-philosophy statement), a late upload (because you put off doing it until the midnight of the deadline and your hard drive crashed), or even a typo on the sixth paragraph of your cover letter may get you passed up before you?re even fully considered.

So details matter. All the more reason to get the materials and the procedures right.

Create a system; follow it. One of my doctoral advisees is seeking a tenure-track position?he?s amazing, by the way; please hire him!?and has shown the true diligence of the professional. He has constructed an Excel chart to help him keep track of the openings, the required materials for each, references, deadlines, keywords in the job profile, and so on. While it took him some time to put together and will require updating, the chart will help him avoid the ?What is that deadline again?? problem.

Follow his lead: Create some sort of system that will help you know the who, what, where, and when of the hunt. Allow some boxes for ?extra? or ?other? to annotate details native to a particular search, such as a page-length limit on a cover letter.

Note any new developments, such as when your references confirm they have sent off your letters of recommendation, and check them off as they occur. Include a box for ?connections? to fill in with any information about faculty members at the hiring department?especially the search chair or committee members. If you used one of their books when you were working as a TA, for instance, you might want to make a note of that and mention it if you get an interview.

Scan the chart at least once a week to make sure you aren?t missing any coming deadlines.

The CV as introduction to you. Faculty members are busy, and even something as important as a new hire will not get everyone?s deep, undivided, thoughtful inspection. That?s why some materials are more important than others in capturing the committee?s attention, with the CV and the cover letter (more on that later) perhaps tied for No. 1.

The CV is the most accessible document you will send in: A committee can glance over it a lot more easily than a teaching-philosophy statement or a sample of one of your publications.

The first page of the CV may even be the make-or-break initial filter of whether you fit the position profile. Just looking at your dissertation title may excite one committee and persuade another to stop reading. If you are applying for a job in a particular subfield, and your dissertation and advisers are obviously in another, the searchers may simply view that as a look-no-further indicator of ?not right for the position.?

So what can you do? Certain information is required on every CV, but you can reorganize it for different positions to emphasize areas in which you fit well with the job description at hand. If you are applying for a job at a teaching-oriented college, for example, your classroom experience should be prominent on your vita.

Don?t be afraid to annotate as well where an item on your CV may require additional explanation. Case in point: The dissertation title may not mention a subfield sought by the hiring department, but what if half the chapters of your thesis do? An italicized note elucidating that connection would help. Likewise, if a journal you?ve written for is obscure but has a high impact factor, let the reader know.

Another CV challenge involves which information to leave off. Perhaps you?re applying for a specialized position. Should you delete a few of your publications in unrelated areas to avoid confusion? Maybe, since you are trying to tell the committee that you are focused on what it says it wants. In addition, a CV can look ?stretched? if you include items that seem minor or unrelated?hobbies, marital status, talks at book clubs, and such.

Perhaps the most controversial item to remove from a CV is the dissertation?s year of issue, in the case of an older candidate whose Ph.D has, to use the horrific terminology, ?passed its freshness date.? Yes, age discrimination is illegal even when masked by a request for a ?recent degree,? and dismissing great candidates because they have been adjuncting for three years in a very tough job market is hardly ethical.

Yet it happens a lot, or it would not be talked about so much. Here you have to make your own call. However, the date of dissertation is so common an item on a CV that leaving it off seems to be a clear signal to the committee that you, or your degree, are not fresh off the vine.

Letter of application. The second document that a committee is likely to read completely, or at least peruse, is the cover letter. Here, compared with your CV, you are allowed immensely more freedom of content, style, and tone?but all the choices may daunt you.

Best to begin by determining what you are not going to write. An application letter is not an autobiography, an encyclopedia of your accomplishments, or a cry for help. Think of it instead as a short (no more than two single-spaced pages), reasoned introduction to the main points of why the search committee, and, subsequently, the faculty and relevant administrators, should consider you for at least the next step of an interview.

Begin by taking hints from the people who will decide your fate. Carefully read the job ad to uncover four or five required and preferred characteristics for the position. For example, the department will probably mention a particular subfield. An ad might also include notations like, ?We are looking for someone to teach classes in ?social media and health? and ?introduction to strategic communication campaigns,?? or to take particular methodological approaches. Highlight those keywords?and enter them on the job chart you?ve created. Make sure your cover letter exactly answers how you fit each characteristic.

Cover letters do not have a standard format, and they would be painful to read if they did. But incorporating your skills, talents, and achievements as well as philosophy and outlook into the categories that a search committee has provided is the best way to organize a letter. That doesn?t mean that you can?t add further talking points, such as some relevant technical, intellectual, or experiential skill. A personal touch?mentioning how much (and why) you like the prospect of teaching at this kind of institution or living in the area?can?t hurt so long as it is sincere and specific, not forced and generic.

Be positive in the style and tone of your letter. Never complain about your current situation. You are auditioning to be not just a researcher or teacher but also a colleague, so sound like you will be a good one. Don?t simply list your solo achievements; offer some examples of your cooperation with or service to others.

A cover letter is rarely a good place to deal with problems. Perhaps you received below-average ratings from students for a class you taught by yourself. Consider asking your references to offer context. Your adviser, for example, might explain that the below-par evaluations were the result of your teaching a tough, ?eat-your-peas? skills class that was undergoing a content revision. She might then add how you worked hard to learn from the experience and have greatly improved as a teacher.

Similarly, be careful about overcongratulating yourself. If you are applying for a research-heavy position and you have already published quite a bit, don?t actually say things like, ?I am the most published graduate student I know!? Rather feature your publications list up high in your CV, mention them in your letter, but leave the effusive praise to your references. Instead of sounding like a prima donna, you will seem a star in the making.

References. I have written several columns already about choosing good references for an application. You want to make sure they are not, by error or intention, actually ?unrecommending? you for the job, nor should they be so over-the-top that they are not taken seriously.

Here I want to restrict myself to the actual selection of your references. First, you don?t want a reference list that looks like you?re trying to avoid something or somebody. Listing three assistant professors, for example, is problematic because (a) they are much less likely to have longstanding personal connections in your field; (b) they are unlikely to be ?names? that might lend you some of their prestige; and (c) their uniform selection may prompt the search committee to ask, ?Didn?t this candidate impress anyone on the senior faculty??

So balance the roster. Your adviser is almost a requirement. But other supporters can include those who are familiar with different parts of your expertise. Not every reference letter can or should be identical. For a mixed position of teaching, research, and service, you might have one of the standard troika write about your excellence in research, another about your classroom skills, and a third talk up what a great colleague you?ve been.

Others to include? Your department chair may not have supervised you or sat on your committee but can testify to your professionalism and good citizenship. (Note: The head of the search committee may call your chair anyway.) Consider listing outsiders as well, such as professors you have impressed at other colleges.

Your teaching philosophy. No item in an academic-job application is as puzzled over and even derided as the teaching-philosophy statement. There is nothing wrong with the idea per se; it is important that you be able to articulate why you do what you do in the classroom.

Perhaps the problem is the word ?philosophy.? It forces people to think they must sound lofty, high-minded, and altruistic. I prefer to call the document a ?teaching statement.? In it, I would rather read an explanation of your practical approaches to teaching, an annotated description of your experience, and, perhaps most important, your attitudes toward the craft through the observations you have made and lessons you have learned.

You?ve probably taught or been a TA in at least one course that did not have great results or strong student-evaluation scores. Here is an opportunity to show how you ?course correct? versus showing how correct your courses have been. Talk about the problem student in that course, the time you realized your lecture had turned out to be incomprehensible, the discussion section from hell. Then describe how you bounced back, learned from the experience, and did it better thereafter.?Good teachers, as other good teachers realize, are constantly adapting. No one gets it right every time and certainly not the first time.

Review, proof, and check off. You may never hear if your application packet suffered from a small or epic fail of logistics. A kindhearted search chair may call you to say that Page 2 of your CV is missing, or she may toss your application aside and proceed to the next one. Almost nobody will call you to tell you that you forgot to proofread your teaching statement.

So look things over several times. Have a trusted and literate friend do the same?perhaps you can trade off the duties. That advice may seem self-evident but we all make mistakes in the rush of any major project. Also, check off on your job chart any application that is ready to go.

Getting all of the required materials done correctly and promptly will not necessarily get you the position, but the effort will allow you to leap the first hurdle toward being considered for it.

That said, this is 2012. We are in the third decade of the public Internet. Along with the official application materials comes the much hazier world of what search committees learn about you from the Web. How not to be embarrassed by?and instead prosper from?the unofficial materials of the job search will be the focus of my next column.

Again... a new one

Hey there!
My name is Syshil and i'm an 19 years old girl born in the Netherlands. I may not be the best writer in english, but i want to give it a try you know... i'm just addicted to roleplaying, and have always been roleplaying with some friends of mine... but they kinda "stopped" some time ago, and left me and my imagionation bleeding and alone.
In real life i'm a student, trying hard to become a VET one day. So, i guess you understand that next to writing, animals are like... my obsession. Also i love to create and think up my own clothes, based on games like Assassins creed, Animes, Movies, etc. Yup, a whole package of imagionation!

Now, let's talk a little bit more about Roleplaying. I have started roleplaying in english on the age of... 10 i think. So, that's 9 years of experience. I know sometimes my english grammer goes totally wrong, and i appreciate it when people notice that and tell me what exactly i am doing wrong. I want to become a better writer in english of course.
My roleplay interests are mainly Magic and Fantasy... I like dramatic roleplays.. with suspence... and everytime a player goes offline... there is a huge cliffhanger! I love it... i really do... and i have this great story in my mind for a long time already after reading a book. I really, really want to roleplay and i only roleplay in the "I-form" ("I walked down the road"... instead of "Darian walked down the road"... it makes me feel more connected with my characters) and obviously like it when the people i roleplay with have that same writing style. It makes things more interesting i think.

I still do not know sure how Valucre actually works... but i really want to start this roleplay i have in mind... and create my characters that only live in my head... If there's anybody around who feels like..... helping me every now and then... i would love it!

Rare cells regulate immune responses; May offer novel treatment for autoimmune diseases

Rare cells regulate immune responses; May offer novel treatment for autoimmune diseases [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 14-Oct-2012

DURHAM, NC -- Reproducing a rare type of B cell in the laboratory and infusing it back into the body may provide an effective treatment for severe autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center.

The findings, which were demonstrated in mice, highlight the unique properties of a subset of B cells that normally controls immune responses and limits autoimmunity, in which an organism mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissue. The work appears Oct. 14, 2012, in the journal Nature.

B cells are the component of the immune system that creates antibodies, which fight pathogens like bacteria and viruses. However, a small subset of B cells, called regulatory B cells, works to suppress immune responses. These B cells are characterized by a cell-signaling protein called interleukin-10 (IL-10), giving these regulatory B cells the name B10 cells.

While B10 cells are small in number, they are important for controlling inflammation and autoimmunity. B10 cells can also limit normal immune responses during infections, reducing inadvertent damage to healthy body tissue.

"Regulatory B cells are a fairly new finding that we're just beginning to understand," said Thomas F. Tedder, PhD, professor of immunology at Duke and study author. "B10 cells are important because they make sure an immune response doesn't get carried away, resulting in autoimmunity or pathology. This study shows for the first time that there is a highly controlled process that determines when and where these cells produce IL-10."

Tedder and his colleagues studied the process of IL-10 production in the B10 cells of mice. Creating IL-10 requires physical interactions between B10 cells and T cells, which play a role in turning on the immune system.

The researchers found that B10 cells only respond to very specific antigens. Recognizing these antigens drives the function of B10 cells, causing them to turn off certain T cells when they bind the same antigen to prevent them from harming healthy tissue.

With this understanding of B10 cells, researchers set out to learn whether B10 cells could be harnessed as a cellular therapy, given their ability to regulate immune responses and autoimmunity.

"Since B10 cells are extremely rare, it was important that we find a feasible solution to reproduce these cells outside the body to make them available," Tedder said.

The researchers learned that the B10 cells could be isolated from the body and would maintain their ability to regulate immune responses. Moreover, they could be reproduced in large numbers.

"Normal B cells usually die quickly when cultured, but we have learned how to expand their numbers by about 25,000-fold. However, the rare B10 cells in the cultures expand their numbers by four-million-fold, which is remarkable. Now, we can take the B10 cells from one mouse and increase them in culture over nine days to where we can effectively treat 8,000 mice with autoimmune disease," said Tedder.

When a small amount of B10 cells were introduced into mice with multiple sclerosis-like autoimmune disease, their symptoms were significantly reduced, essentially turning off the disease.

"B10 cells will only shut off what they are programmed to shut off. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you would want cells that would only go after your rheumatoid arthritis," continued Tedder. "This research shows that we may have the potential to unharness regulatory cells, make millions of copies, and introduce them back into someone with autoimmune disease to shut down the disease. This may also treat transplanted organ rejection."

Additional research is needed to learn how to expand human B10 cells and determine how B10 cells behave in humans, building on the study's insights into the mechanisms behind their function and autoimmunity.

"Autoimmune diseases are very complicated, so creating a single therapy that allows us to go after multiple disease targets without causing immunosuppression has proven to be difficult." Tedder said. "Here, we're hoping to take what Mother Nature has already created, improve on it by expanding the cells outside of the body, and then put them back in to let Mother Nature go back to work."

In addition to Tedder, Duke study authors include Ayumi Yoshizaki, Tomomitsu Miyagaki, David J. DiLillo, Takashi Matsushita, Mayuka Horikawa, Evgueni I. Kountikov, and Jonathan C. Poe. The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (AI56363 and AI057157), the Lymphoma Research Foundation, and the Division of Intramural Research, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH.

Moon rocks, chunks of Mars on auction block in New York

NEW YORK | Sun Oct 14, 2012 4:16pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Several lumps of Mars and the biggest piece of the Moon ever offered for sale were unveiled on Sunday in New York in what organizers described as history's largest meteorite auction.

More than 125 meteorites were being auctioned in the private sale, including an iron meteorite resembling a howling face that was found in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa and a slice of the Willamette meteorite from the American Museum of Natural History, estimated to sell for at least $85,000. The 4-pound (1.8-kg) Moon rock was expected to go for more than $340,000.

"We cover a very, very wide spectrum of material," said Darryl Pitt, the meteorite consultant for Heritage Auctions, which is conducting the sale.

Some pieces were expected to be available for just a few hundred dollars.

"We wanted to make certain there's something for everyone. We want to be egalitarian when we're offering outer space," Pitt told Reuters.

Meteorites are priced for their size, rarity, beauty and provenance -- buyers are typically willing to pay more for bits of rock or iron known to have originated on the Moon or Mars. Lunar meteorites are particularly rare, he said, with only about 135 pounds (61.2 kg) of the rock known to exist on Earth.

"It is the oldest material mankind can touch, the raw ingredients of the planets," Pitt said in describing the appeal of collecting meteorites.

Other lots for sale included a large fragment of the Tissint meteorite of Martian origin that fell only last year in Morocco and a chunk of the Peekskill meteorite that was caught on video cameras 20 years ago burning through the sky before smacking into a Chevy Malibu parked in the town about 50 miles north of New York City.

Fewer qualms for gun-rights groups over Romney now

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Gun-rights groups perceive President Barack Obama as a threat to unfettered access to firearms. They once had qualms about Mitt Romney, too.

But times and circumstances have changed for Romney, the GOP presidential nominee now in tune with the National Rifle Association and similar organizations, whose members are motivated voters.

In the tight White House race, every bit of support helps, especially in the most closely contested states and particularly from groups that claim millions of members nationwide.

Romney's prior embrace of weapon-control proposals had put him crossways with the NRA and others. These days, Romney is on their good side by opposing renewal of a federal ban on semiautomatic weapons, additional regulations on gun shows and suggested federal gun registration requirements.

The NRA and some less prominent organizations are spending big money on mailings, radio ads, TV commercials and booths at game fairs to promote the former Massachusetts governor and portray Obama as hostile to gun rights.

Gun groups are an important part of an outdoor enthusiast network that neither side is willing to concede.

There are "Sportsmen for Romney" and "Sportsmen for Obama," all playing to the largely male hook-and-bullet crowd that is protective of recreational passions. Neither candidate is considered an avid outdoorsman, though each has made mention of fishing rods or been photographed casting a line.

Romney and his allies underscore his hands-off stance when it comes to guns, and say he would move to open more public land to hunting. They also promote the bona fides of running mate Paul Ryan, who has a permit for just about every season in Wisconsin, his home state.

Last month, Ryan reminded a gathering of sportsmen in Ohio of the hours he has logged in duck blinds, deer stands, pheasant fields and fishing boats. Then came his critique of Obama: "I wonder, I shudder as a gun owner, seeing his record when he was in the Illinois state Senate, what would he do if he never has to face the voters ever again?"

It's the type of message that resonates with voters such as Stan Glover of Bowerston, Ohio. Glover said Romney's past stands gave him pause, but he's more nervous about Obama.

"The uncertainty of politics in Washington, as regards hunters/gun owner rights, has caused undue fear amongst folks that enjoy the shooting sports," said Glover, a manufacturing plant sales director who plans to vote for Romney.

The Obama campaign emphasizes steps by his administration to promote habitat conservation, set aside land and preserve access to land used for recreation. Supporters point to Obama's "American Great Outdoors Initiative" to coordinate conservation and natural resource efforts in all 50 states, whether it's restoring wetlands in Iowa's duck-rich Prairie Pothole Region or filtering phosphorous harmful to fish and fowl in Grand Lake St. Marys in Ohio.

For Obama, minimizing Romney's apparent advantage among voters who place a premium on outdoors issues is the name of the game.

In Iowa and other states, that task falls to people such as Dick Dearden. He's a Democratic state senator and leader of a group of pro-Obama outdoors enthusiasts working to combat negative portrayals of the incumbent among the shotgun crowd.

"The president is not a threat to people who hunt and fish. He's an asset," Dearden said. "I'm a member of the NRA and they are beginning to more and more embarrass me. I'm a Second Amendment person, but I have not seen anything this president has done for the last four years that has hurt anyone's Second Amendment rights."

Obama's campaign highlights a law he signed in his first year as president that allows people with weapons permits to bring loaded guns into national parks and wildlife refuges. The change drew rebukes from gun-control advocates.

But groups working to defeat Obama sound alarms about his support of reinstating an assault weapons ban if one made it through Congress. They also are stoking fears that the president would use a second term to appoint federal judges with restrictive views toward gun ownership. The Supreme Court has been closely divided in recent gun cases, and the balance could shift if Obama had the chance to pick any new justices.

Romney told the leader of the NRA's lobbying arm in a question-and-answer piece published last month that he would appoint "wise, experienced and restrained judges" and fill his Cabinet with "people who agree that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental, individual right."

His own views have evolved from when he ran for the Senate and was governor in Massachusetts. In his failed 1994 Senate campaign he backed a waiting period on gun sales and an assault weapons ban that he said were "not going to make me the hero of the NRA." As governor, he signed a state-level assault weapons ban that he argued was part of a brokered deal between the sides in the gun debate.

In the NRA interview published in September, Romney unequivocally opposed new gun restrictions, including one on semiautomatic weapons. "I do not support any additional laws to restrict the right to keep and bear arms," he said. The group endorsed him in Virginia in early October and has since reserved more than $1.3 million in TV ad time in in Florida, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, acknowledged some hesitancy about Romney but said gun-rights activists were mollified by his selection of Ryan as a running mate.

"It created a lot more willingness to pull his lever, and at least some enthusiasm," Pratt said. "Ryan is at least one of us."

From the Editor's Desk: Some quick hits

Phil Nickinson

We've got another fall http://androidcentral.com/ctiaCTIA event in the books. By most accounts, this one was pretty much a snoozer, even more so than the other "apps and enterprise"-focused events of the past. Hopefully the non-media folks got more out of it than we did. Up next is the Oct. 24 U.S. launch event for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. And then ... Nexus event? Let's hope so.

And now, with apologies to SI writer Peter King, some things I think I think:

  • We finally can post directly to the Android Central Google+ page from the Android app. It's not perfect -- having to log out first, then log back in, and then choose which page to post to is a bit of a chore, but it's better than nothing.
  • Along that front, we're going to start posting more event photos there -- of things other than phones and tablets. We've started with some of the fun things from San Diego last week. See if you spot any old friends.
  • By the way, we banged out a quick podcast on Friday, rounding up what we know about the LG Nexus stuff. It was kind of nice to not do it live, and to not worry about video. But we'll be back to our normal selves this week.
  • I'm officially excited for a new Nexus. Yes. Even if it's LG. And maybe especially because it's LG. Like Jerry wrote last week, folks need to let stuff go sometimes. But, hey. It's your ulcer. Not mine.
  • We're finally spitting our headlines onto App Dot Net. (That's Twitter for those who hate Twitter.) I'm on there as well. Just cross-posting from Twitter, though.
  • I finally got some face time with the HTC One VX. If you're on AT&T and are in the market for something a little cheaper and more traditionally shaped than the One X, give it a look-see. The qHD resolution looks surprisingly good on that thing.
  • Finally got to play with the RAZR M as well. Not a bad little phone. Also not true "edge to edge."
  • Will we see a tweaked Nexus 7 before or after Apple's Oct. 23 iPad Mini event?

Enjoy your Sunday, everybody. It's back to work on Monday.
