26 bus operators shuttered over safety concerns

Federal transportation officials have shut down 26 bus operators in the Northeast corridor after a year-long investigation found that the companies posed an "imminent hazard" to public safety.

The Department of Transportation, which oversaw the investigation, called the shutdown orders the "largest single safety crackdown in the agency's history" in a press release issued Thursday.

The action applies to nine active bus companies, 13 companies that had been ordered out of service but continued to operate and three companies that had applied to become operators, as well as one ticket seller. The companies were primarily run by Apex Bus, Inc., I-95 Coach, Inc. and New Century Travel, Inc. and collectively transported more than 1,800 passengers daily from New York to Florida along Interstate 95.

The carriers had multiple safety violations, according to safety investigators. The companies employed drivers without valid commercial driver's licenses, failed to create drug and alcohol testing programs and operated buses that had not been routinely inspected and repaired.

The investigation began last year after a series of deadly bus crashes along I-95.

The companies cited in the investigation will not be allowed to operate under another name in the future under a new rule that revokes the carrier's operating authority and matches new companies to ones previously shut down.

Under the direction of Executive and Artistic Director of the New Jersey Arts Incubator, Carol Berman, OSPAC will add additional artistic disciplines to the programming and work towards creating an all-weather, year round facility. ?I am really excited to build upon the foundation created at OSPAC to bring new and diverse programming to the facility. 'So You Think You Can Dance' Goes Hollywood

Characters rule in the L.A. leg, with Marshea Kidd and Cole Horibe especially impressing the judges.

"So You Think You Can Dance" returned with its third round of auditions, landing smack in the middle of LaLa Land. Characters ruled in the Los Angeles leg of the competition, in an episode reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster. Guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" joined judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in narrowing down the dancing field.

While hip-hop, animation and exorcism ruled in the season premiere of "SYTYCD," the second episode was saturated with contemporary routines full of sensuality, sadness and ... martial arts? It was the dancers' unique personalities that brought their talents to life.

Starlet
The heroine came early but left a serious mark with the judges. Eliana Girard, a trained dancer, circus performer and pole dancer, wowed the judges with her mile-long legs and emotional connection to the dance. Murphy said Girard was "Definitely top 20 material," while Lythgoe commented, "You are one of the best girls this year." Girard received a standing ovation and a sweet golden ticket to Vegas.

Comic Relief
Jontel "Johnny Waacks" Gibson — need we say more? "I think I was born in the wrong era," Gibson said of himself in his intro package as he donned a bright '70s-inspired outfit to go with his revival of the dance style "waacking." More than his dance, Gibson had the judges splitting with laughter as they made reference after reference to the sexual innuendo behind the word "waacking." The waacking routine was not the first in the show's history, and Gibson did not make it through to Vegas after falling flat in the choreography round.

Stunt Doubles
Hilarity ensued upon the arrival of twin brothers Nick and James Aragon, a.k.a. the "Ninja Twins." The athletes-turned-dancers entertained to the max with their twin jibber jabber — finishing each other's sentences, speaking simultaneously and ribbing one another about who was the "best." After their joint performance, Lythgoe exclaimed, "You have made this show for me, right now." Unfortunately, the eccentric siblings were two years too old for the 30-year eligibility cutoff required and could not make it through but were praised for their talents and told to get a reality show.

Victim
Every story has a victim, and in this episode, it was 18-year-old Sam Lenarz. After multiple disagreements with her mother, the teenager was thrown out of her home and taken in by her best friend's family. The pain of the ordeal was evident in her performance. Jesse Tyler Ferguson pointed out that her routine was laden with "simmering sadness, in a beautiful way." Things turned up for Lenarz after she was granted a go-ahead to move on in the competition.

Action Hero
Cole Horibe proved to be more than a pretty face, as most action heroes do, with a martial-arts-infused dance that showed off his inhuman strength and control. Performing with extreme precision, the judges called Horibe's legs "lethal" and without blinking offered him a ticket to Vegas. The decision was easier after Horibe jokingly threatened to come after the judges if they didn't.

Villain
What story would be complete without a villain? OK, a reformed villain, to be precise. And Wednesday night's came in the form of Jonathan Anzalone, a former contestant from season four who returned to humble himself after his first audition debacle on the show. Anzalone was criticized for his arrogance and returned to prove to the judges and the world that he had matured and respected their decisions. Their final decision: good, but not good enough. Anzalone was not allowed to move on.

Scene-Stealer
The real scene-stealer of the night, though, was Marshea Kidd. The 22-year old had auditioned unsuccessfully in seasons past but returned with a whole new take on dance and life. Kidd had survived a horrific car accident just six weeks prior, pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital. His "SYTYCD" audition was his first time onstage after breaking his neck and coming out of a coma. Kidd's beautiful performance illuminated the stage and his new zest for life was felt by all in the room. Speechless, the judges merely waved a golden ticket in front of Kidd and reduced him and his family to tears.

The dancers in Los Angeles more than lived up to the judges' expectations and took the show further with their diverse characters. "So You Think You Can Dance" returns next week in the Dirty South.

Don?t view your freebie as simply something to give away to get more subscribers. If you do, that?s all it will be and though you will acquire a few subscribers, you will do nothing for your reputation and potentially harm it.

• Who? Your freebie must solve a need for your subscribers. The first step to knowing what to offer is KNOWING your audience.

Who are your customers?
What are their needs?
What are their problems?

As web designers, your audience is not other web designers?unless you are a web design instructor or teacher. Therefore, giving away a report on web design that includes complex programming and tutorials will not be successful.

If your audience is composed of small business owners who run websites but need assistance with marketing, consider a report about optimizing websites for conversions, split testing, usability testing, or the latest internet trends.

The trick to nailing your conversions is to become intimately acquainted with the people you service!

Find out what their specific pain points are and you will find a stream of success.

• Make it substantial! This is not the time for a two-paragraph report on what Aunt Matilda said about web design. If you are giving away a free report, it should be at least eight pages in length and look professional. Use a company logo and professional graphics throughout.

• Edits are Crucial! Many of our readers hail from all over the world and we welcome a diverse group of people. Some, however, are not fluent in English, or they know English, but not well enough to write with perfect grammar. If you fall into these categories, I suggest you hire an English editor to proofread your report or ebook so it has maximum impact.

The Opt-in box is the site of the email address query where subscribers add their email addresses. The design and look of this box is very important and will influence conversions.

Design

The design of the subscription box should look like an extension of your website, but stand out from the page just enough to be noticed.

Here are some important design elements to remember:

1. Attention-grabbing headline

The headline must catch your web visitors? eyes immediately. It should be in a different typeface than the rest of the copy and solve a problem for your visitors. After reading your headline, your web visitors should feel that you know their problems and your newsletter/mailings will help them.

2. Graphics

The graphic is not necessary in all cases, but it is a good practice when you are giving away a report or ebook. The graphic should look like the 3D physical form of the item you are offering in return for a subscriber?s email address.

3. Benefits

Mention a few benefits or even one so visitors will know what to expect. Inform them of what they will receive and why they will want it. If you are not offering a freebie, use the copy space to tell potential subscribers the benefits of joining your newsletter and what they can expect.

Remember that an email address is someone?s private possession. You have to earn the right to receive it.

4. FREE

IF you are offering a freebie, add the word ?Free? to make a bigger impact. Also, don?t forget to tell your visitors to enter their email to receive free access to their gift.

Tip: It?s a good practice to inform your subscribers that you will never share their email and you hate spam just as much as they do.

5. Call to Action

Your call to action should be interesting and attention-grabbing. Consider text like ?Get Instant Access? or ?Sign Me Up?.

Location

The location of the subscription form will also influence your conversions. It is recommended to test the placement to determine the optimal position.

Footer

Many marketers use a footer opt-in as a secondary source. However, some web designers use the footer opt-in exclusively. You will need to test to see which scenario works best. It may be a good place to start.

Pop Up

Popups actually perform very well even though they can be annoying. My advice is to use them at your own risk. Some very prominent marketers swear by them and others stay far away.

Dan Zarrella, social media scientist, has been using the popup for years now. It annoys me because every time I click on a new page it continues to disrupt my reading, but he offers incredible value with his information. If you want to try the popup, make sure to test different positions to see which location performs the best.

The Messages

The main goal of your email campaigns is to develop relationships, nurture leads and offer value WITHOUT selling repeatedly and spamming your subscribers? inboxes.

What should the email messages consist of?

Here are some ideas:

• Recent blog posts
• Helpful industry tips
• Recent projects
• Links to helpful resources
• Company news
• Contests and promotions
• Special offers
• Incentivized surveys
• Personal stories (occasionally)

When composing your messages, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

• Don?t send the same old content everyone reads. Even if it is similar, find a way to make it creative and interesting.

• Keep it short! Use bullets and one to two sentence paragraphs.

• Make your subscribers feel exclusive. Use their name, and address them directly as if you are talking only to them. Similar to how people feel when they pay thousands of dollars to be part of a club membership, your subscribers will feel special if you make an extra effort.

• Don?t know where to start? Curate! If you are not a writer and you do not have the budget to hire anyone, consider researching the web for the top information and send the links to your readers.

• Give people the option to unsubscribe.

• Don?t take unsubscribes personally. Sometimes I unsubscribe from a list simply because I am trying to streamline my emails. It happens to everyone. However, when you notice a bundle of them at one time or a continuous flow, it may be time to adjust your campaign.

• Be careful not to use words that trigger SPAM filters or your email will end up in your subscribers? junk mail. Here is an extensive list of email SPAM trigger words.

EVA is all set to upgrade their business class | Business Travel Blog

According to the up market news EVA has planned to reduce the number of seats in business class on the plane but is going to increase the fare of the remaining seats to as much as twenty percent. Only yesterday it was announced by EVA Airways that it had plans to spend hundred million US dollars that would be required to upgrade its business class in fleet of 15 Boeing 777-300 ER aircrafts. This was in the hope that focusing on the premium customers will help them increase their revenue.

EVA is the second largest airline carrier of the nation. The carrier seems to finish up gradation by the August next year. The first plane to get facelift is by the end of this month and is expected to operate from June 2nd on New York ? Taipei route. Chang Kuo-Wei who is the president of EVA in briefing to media told that as they are facing very tough competition in economy class services, the company wants to attract more premium customers to their airlines through up gradation. Chang also showed his concern on rising budget airlines that made it difficult for their company to focus entirely on the economy class. This is the reason why this company decided to follow the example of Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airlines to target and concentrate more business class passengers. Chang said that to attain this, the company thought of novel idea to reduce the number of seats and to increase the fare by 20 percent which would increase their revenue to a great extent. Chang also added that it was good idea to invest more when there is market downbeat and the prospects of airlines were low this year and was apt time for up gradation when all the product prices were low.

He also showed his expectation in the improvement of revenue in the second quarter as against the first quarter where there is higher sale in cargo and also the freight rate and volume is stable. However the peak season from July to September remains the most testing time for the airlines to show its ability added Chang and continued that rise in the fuel prices added to the woes and inversely affected the profitability of the company. Company is determined to put in hard work and vigorously trying to improve sales performance but all our hard work is only going to benefit and will be reaped by oil companies he said. Chang also added that unlike Delta Air Lines Inc, they did not have plans of buying oil refineries as they lacked the expertise of running the oil refining company.

According to TWSE ? Taiwan Stock exchange, EVA?s per share value was marked at NT$0.33 which meant net loss of NT$1.08 billion in the first quarter. Compared to this they had netted a profit of NT$269.32 million with per share rate of NT$0.08 last year. Amid bribery scandal, Wal-Mart talks integrity

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas -- ?Top executives of Wal-Mart Stores Inc did not directly mention a Mexican bribery scandal at an employee pep rally on Wednesday, but asked their international workers to focus on "integrity" as a core value.

The world's largest retailer has been under fire from shareholders and activists after the New York Times reported in April that management at Wal-Mart de Mexico, or Walmex, allegedly orchestrated bribes of $24 million to help it grow quickly last decade and that Wal-Mart's top brass tried to cover it up.

The matter is being investigated by a number of government agencies in Mexico and the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Wal-Mart is also conducting an internal probe.

Executives talked around the allegations in Mexico, the company's first and largest international market. They referenced integrity as one of the company's core values and underscored the importance of complying with local laws.

"It's doing the right thing, every single day," Wal-Mart President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Duke told international workers gathered at the University of Arkansas' Barnhill Arena.

Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart International, said it was up to every employee -- from new associates to top executives -- to guard the company's principles.

"If you see something in your business that you don't think is right, you need to say something," McMillon said.

Scot Rank, president and CEO, Walmart Mexico and Central America, may have come the closest to directly on the allegations, without specifically mentioning bribery.

"Over the years we have faced difficult and challenging times in Mexico and Central America. These events have united us even more, they have motivated us to continue, to continue pursuing excellence, and work with respect and integrity," Rank said at the end of the Mexico and Central America unit's presentation.

Wal-Mart's focus in China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, will be on expanding the right way, Scott Price, president and CEO of Walmart Asia, said earlier in the morning.

"We have to be compliant, we have to follow every rule, every regulation in the country," Price said.

Shareholders, including some of the largest U.S. public pension funds, have called for Duke, former Wal-Mart Stores CEO Lee Scott, Chairman Robson "Rob" Walton and others to be ousted from the company's board of directors in the wake of the Mexico scandal. But such efforts have little chance of succeeding because the family of founder Sam Walton controls roughly half of Wal-Mart's shares and votes.

More than 1,300 international employees traveled to northwest Arkansas for this week's events, which culminate in Friday's annual shareholders meeting.

During Wednesday's meeting, as in previous years, a selection of top international employees were given "Integrity in Action" awards.

Despite the bribery allegations, this year's celebration is still expected to be an upbeat affair. Wal-Mart is marking 50 years since Walton opened the first Walmart store on July 2, 1962, and at Wednesday's meeting representatives from Chile played a video of employees in that country singing "Happy Birthday."

Company shares, which have more than rebounded from the roughly 8 percent drop in the days following the New York Times Mexico story, are trading near all-time highs. The stock was up 16 cents at $65.84 at midday on Wednesday after rising to $65.95.

Kim Kardashian Lets Loose at Beyonce Concert

After a whirlwind trip to Cannes, France last week and losing sentimental items and trust to TSA on her trip home, Kim Kardashian was looking to let loose.

So she did. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star made a beeline for Beyonce's concert at Revel's Ovation Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on Sunday night.

In addition to dancing and singing along to Bey's chart-topping hits, Kim got a chance to chat with the woman of the evening herself backstage. OMG!

More workers opt out of company health plans

Ninety percent of uninsured workers said they didn't have insurance because it was too costly.

The weak economy continues to have a harsh effect on workers? access to health insurance -- not necessarily because workers aren?t offered it but because they can?t afford it.

A new study from the Employment Benefit Research Institute finds that 55.8 percent of employees were getting health insurance directly from their employer as of April 2011, the most recent data available. That?s a nearly 5 percentage point drop from December 2007, when the economy first went into recession, and the researchers said early research shows that the number probably fell further.

The drop comes after more than a decade in which the rate of employees getting insurance in their own name held steady at around 60 percent.

It appears that it?s the cost, not the availability, of health insurance that is the primary thing keeping workers from getting insured.?Ninety percent of uninsured workers said they didn?t have insurance because it was too costly.

The study was based on government data on workers?age 18 to?64.

Paul Fronstin, director of EBRI?s health research and education program, said many employers have been gradually asking employees to foot more of the bill for their care through?higher deductibles and co-payments.

?Employers have changed their focus to managing cost by changing the quality of the coverage that?s being provided,? Fronstin said. ?You see more cost shifting and more employee responsibility when it comes to the cost of health care services.?

He said monthly premiums have not necessarily risen as much, but neither have wages. That may mean people feel like they are forking over a bigger slice of their paycheck for an insurance plan that requires higher and higher deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

?It?s the value of the plan that?s changed more than the premium,? he said.

Some who drop their employer?s coverage may be switching to cheaper private plans or getting covered by a spouse, partner or parent. The percentage of workers who are covered as a dependent on someone else?s plan has held steady at around 17 percent.

Others may just be giving up health insurance altogether.

As the job market becomes stronger, some employers might start offering better?health care benefits to?compete for key employees.

But Fronstin noted that because employers generally make decisions about health care coverage six months to a year in advance, any improvements will likely lag quite a bit.
